JIU-JITSU AS AN ANTI BULLYING TOOL

  • Bullying as a threat
  • Jiu-Jitsu’s purpose and origin
  • Jiu-Jitsu’s self-defense as the best choice to help children
  • Children’s mentality to deal with bullying, with Jiu-Jitsu

According to data from the National Center for Educational Statistics in the United States, one in five students report that they have been bullied. This may include physical aggression that can get serious and must be prevented, by giving the children the right tools to deal with this type of situation if it occurs. That’s when Jiu-Jitsu comes in handy.

Jiu-Jitsu was created in India about three thousand years before Christ and practiced by Buddhist monks, who were concerned with self-defense and avoiding the use of force and weapons. Japan was where the art became popular in the 19th century and years later the figure of Carlos Gracie presents itself: a Brazilian fighter that saw Jiu- Jitsu as a way to become a more tolerant, respectful and self-confident man and created Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. It is a solid method which consolidated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as the standard and followed its new rules.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has then become a socio-educational tool. All over the world the modality is taught to children, women and security agents, from the police to the military forces.

The self-defense preached by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is based on different techniques in ground combat to immobilize the opponent, through principles of balance and the body’s articulation system and levers. It often uses the strength of the opponent against themselves, which means that larger people can be defeated by others who are less strong.

The main reason why Jiu-Jitsu is the best choice for our children is not only because they now have the ability to defend themselves in case of real attacks, but also to stay calm, focused and self-confident in situations that could bring them harm. They learn to dialogue and impose in the face of humiliating situations, without necessarily needing the physical strength to do so.

In GB Thousand Oaks, kids learn specific self-defense techniques in everyday classes, in addition to having seminars that teach them how to deal with aggressive and nonaggressive cases. They understand how to recognise bullying and take preventative measures, being able to avoid aggression and having a more assertive posture.
