Here is a detailed guide on what to bring and what to expect on your first day.

Your First Day at Gracie Barra Thousand Oaks: What to Bring

  1. Essential Items You MUST Bring

These items are required for your personal safety, hygiene, and comfort.

Item  Importance & Details  Why You Need It

Mat Shoes (Flip-Flops | Sandals)  Mandatory. These are shoes worn only for walking between the mat, the lobby, and the restroom. They must be easily removable.  To maintain the “Red Shield” hygiene standard and prevent bacteria from being tracked onto the mats.

Water Bottle  Bring a large, reusable water bottle. You will need to stay hydrated during and after class.  BJJ is a full-body workout. The Thousand Oaks climate demands consistent hydration.

Comfortable Undergarments  Wear close-fitting athletic wear underneath the Gi (like compression shorts, leggings, and a fitted T-shirt or rashguard).  Provides comfort, prevents chafing, and maintains hygiene under the Gi.

Towel  A small towel for drying sweat, especially if you plan to shower afterward.  For personal comfort and quick clean-up.

  1. Gear Provided by Gracie Barra

You do not need to rush out and purchase the official uniform before your first day.

Loaner Gi (Uniform): Gracie Barra Thousand Oaks will provide a clean, loaner BJJ Gi (kimono) for your introductory class. This allows you to experience training before committing to the mandatory uniform purchase.

The Gi Code: Once you enroll, you will be required to purchase the official Gracie Barra Gi from the Pro Shop. This promotes unity, discipline, and adherence to the academy’s legacy.

  1. Preparation and Hygiene (Non-Negotiable) Checklist

Your personal presentation is a critical part of the martial arts discipline and hygiene standards.

 Checkpoint  Action Required  Safety Reason

Fingernails/Toenails  Must be trimmed short and filed smooth.  Long nails can severely scratch training partners or cause injury during gripping.

Body Hygiene  Shower immediately before class, especially if coming from work or another activity.  Prevents the transmission of skin infections (e.g., ringworm) in the close-contact environment.

Jewelry  Remove all rings, necklaces, earrings, and piercings before class.  Prevents loss of jewelry and serious injury (cuts or torn flesh) to yourself and your partner.

Hair  Tie long hair back securely.  Prevents hair from being pulled or getting caught in grips during grappling.

  1. What NOT to Bring

Aggression or Ego: Leave any intimidation or expectation of “winning” at home. BJJ is a cooperative learning environment.

Outside Food or Drink: Stick to water on the mat.

Street Shoes: Never wear street shoes onto the mat. Use your designated flip-flops only.

Your First Day: What to Expect Upon Arrival

  1. Arrival Time: Plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. This gives you time to check in, sign a liability waiver, and change into your loaner Gi.
  2. The Program Director: You will be greeted by the Program Director or lead instructor. They will answer your questions, fit you with the Gi, and give you a brief tour of the locker rooms and mat area.
  3. The Class: You will be guided into the GB1 Fundamentals Program (or a dedicated introductory session). The focus will be on safety, breakfalls, and basic positioning. You will practice slowly with a cooperative partner.
  4. No Pressure: You will not be required to spar (roll). The first day is about learning to move safely and comfortably.
